God
is Not dead came as far north as Aberdeen, Scotland, this weekend for 2
showings and I went to the Sunday matinee. There were only about 30 of
us there. That was due to lack of publicity, I think. Nothing in online
listings or the local or regional press. No posters at the cinema
either! If Lindsey had not given a headsup, I might have missed it too.
I thought Shane Harper was good as the naive student and Kevin was wonderful! It would have been easy to leave Prof Radisson as a monstrously arrogant, 2 dimensional bully. But Kevin - being Kevin - also let us see his humanity and the deep pain and anger that lay behind Radisson's aggressive atheism. It takes a fine and subtle actor to do that.
As a Sorbo fan, I also appreciated that Kevin's last scene was a reverse mirror image of the hospital scene towards the end of What If...
After the showing I spoke to some of the others. They were mostly from church groups and all were very positive about the film. They also especially praised Kevin's performance - unprompted by me! - even though none of them knew who he was!!!
Several were looking forward to buying the film on DVD and so I suggested they check out Amazon in July and try out What if.. on DVD as well.
The film is unashamedly Christian, but I don't think it deserved the harsh reviews. It is well worth seeing, even if, like me, you are not particularly religious.
