Kevin Sorbo & Dean Cain To Play Themselves On ABC’s ‘Apartment 23′

Two
90s TV icons are set to guest star on ABC’s midseason comedy ‘Apartment
23.’ Like regular cast member James Van Der Beek, the ‘Hercules’ and
‘Lois & Clark’ stars will be playing themselves.
Apartment 23 is shaping up to be yet another impressive comedy for the 2011-2012 pilot season, based in no small part on the self-styled James Van Der Beek. He’ll be joined by two other 90s TV icons: Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain.
Sorbo and Cain won’t be Apartment 23‘s first nods to television days gone by: Van Der Beek will be a major cast member alongside Dreama Walker (Gossip Girl) and Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad). He’ll be playing, well, James Van Der Beek – a ridiculously over-inflated version of himself in a world where being Dawson is a minor superpower. The Beek is a sort of gay best friend (who’s straight) for the streetwise Chloe (Ritter). It’s complicated.ap
He’ll have a few more powers to contend with when he shares the stage with the two guest stars. Sorbo is slated to play himself as a wedding date for Chloe. In a separate episode, Cain will play a rival to Van Der Beek, presumably in the “Hey, aren’t you that guy?” competitions that somewhat notable actors have in and around New York City.
For those of you who are reading this on your iPhones in 5th period, Kevin Sorbo played the title role in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys from 1995-1999. Dean Cain played none other than the last son of Krypton in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 1993-1997. Both actors have kept busy since then, with Cain hosting Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Sorbo starring in sci-fi sleeper hit Andromeda. Both have been appearing in smaller parts on television and movies for decades.
ABC showed off the pilot for Apartment 23 after its upfront presentation, and trust me when I say it’s one of the funniest of the new comedies this season. With the new casting announcements it seems that the show may be becoming a sort of a broadcast Entourage, lining up a string of TV notables to fill roles playing somewhat fictionalized versions of themselves.
Unfortunately the new show isn’t slated to appear on ABC’s schedule until early next year. But if the rest of the first season is anything like the pilot, it’ll be well worth the wait.
