Kevin Sorbo suffered strokes during 'Hercules'
Kevin Sorbo has revealed to Neurology Now that he suffered a series of strokes while starring in 1990s series "Hercules," according to the Hollywood Reporter.
"I felt like I had been transformed overnight from a youthful,
carefree jock into someone who needed to grasp the backs of chairs and
counters for an arduous five-yard trip to the bathroom," Sorbo says of
his health scare. In 1997, the actor began getting mysterious symptoms – pain, aches, tingling and cold sensations in his left arm and hand. Then 38-years-old, he was checked out by a doctor, but “they didn’t believe it was anything serious,” Kevin said.
But after getting his neck cracked by his longtime chiropractor, Sorbo had blurry vision, was dizzy and heard a buzzing in his head. When he woke up the next day, the actor discovered his speech was slurred and he could hardly walk.
Hospital tests revealed an aneurysm in an artery near his shoulder. "I had blockages all down my arm that were making my fingers cold, tingly, and numb,” he said.
After undergoing a surgical procedure to remedy the aneurysm, Sorbo found out that he had suffered three distinct strokes. The cause of the strokes remains unknown.
"I went through two years of hell before I began to feel like myself again,” he shared of dealing with his medical issues. “I was depressed and frustrated and had a bad attitude."
But Sorbo received support from the “Hercules” producers, who worked around his recovery. The show ran from 1995 to 1999.
The actor, now 53, is married with three children. He chronicled his health struggles in a new book, “True Strength: My Journey from Hercules to Mere Mortal and How Nearly Dying Saved My Life.”
